Kevin’s weather: Wabash Valley earthquakes

Last Thursday, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Bloomingdale, Indiana in Park County. By most standards, it was a small earthquake, but many of us in the area felt it.

Earthquakes are not alien to our region. Many of the earthquakes we feel are related to the mysterious Wabash Valley fault system. I say vague because not much is known about it. Most geologists believe that the fault system generally extends from southeastern Illinois to southwestern Indiana. It would be correct to think of the fault system as running under the Wabash River and running for several miles west and east. The depth of this rift system is estimated to be about 4 miles below the Earth’s surface. Note that this is called a system error. This means that instead of a single distinct fault line running underground, the Wabash Valley Fault System can be thought of as a series of “cracks”, like the branches of a tree. At least, that’s what geologists believe. The truth is, no one has ever seen this system of defects.

While the last earthquake was 3.8 on the Richter scale, the Wabash Valley has seen a few stronger earthquakes. In 1987 and 2008, 5.2 earthquakes were recorded. Historically, geologists believe that this system caused much larger earthquakes. Some may be in the 6 to 7 range on the Richter scale. An earthquake of this magnitude today would be disastrous.

So, while earthquakes in the Wabash Valley have been relatively minor over the past several years, there is always the possibility that we will one day have the “big quake”. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict when this will happen.

I often tell people that if they lived in the Wabash Valley long enough, they would feel an earthquake. This is because there is an error system under our feet!
