Coronavirus: The UK records the highest death toll in Europe – BBC News

The United Kingdom has the highest number of deaths in Europe thanks to the European coronavirus. It has surpassed Italy, and is second only to the number of deaths caused by the disease in the United States.

Dominic Raab, the first secretary of state, said the latest figures represented a “severe tragedy” but warned that comparisons with other countries would be made until more information on all causes of death became available.

Recent data show that there were 693 deaths related to the virus within 24 hours in the UK. This brings the number of deaths officially linked to the virus to 29,427.

It is becoming increasingly clear to people in the most vulnerable state of the pandemic. Recent data from the State Statistics Office for the Environment and Wales show that deaths in England and Wales at home increased more than the number of deaths associated with coronavirus in the week ending 24 April.

That week there were 2,794 deaths in coronavirus-related care homes, bringing the total to nearly 6,000 care deaths by April 24.
