Coronavirus: Men With Prostate Cancer Swap Chemotherapy And Precision Drugs

According to NHS England, men with advanced prostate cancer can receive highly targeted hormone therapy at home instead of being hospitalized for chemotherapy.
Experts say it will ease the pressure on the NHS who wants all urgent and essential cancer treatments to continue during the coronavirus pandemic.
They also say that medicines are a smarter, more benign treatment that can prolong the life of more patients.
This precision medicine approach is already used to treat other cancers.
“Giant shock”
Ashtead’s 66-year-old Stuart Fraser in Surrey, who was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in February, will take four enzalutamide tablets daily.
“It was a big shock to be diagnosed,” he said.
“I was even more worried that the coronavirus was not able to give me the usual treatment for chemotherapy, which would affect the immune system.
“When I heard about other possible treatments like Avilaterone or Enzalutamide, I started a petition trying to allow a man like me to get it.
“That’s why it’s great news that no one is in the same position I was at the beginning of all this.”
Enzalutamide blocks the effects of testosterone hormones on prostate cancer cells and prevents their growth.
Patients intolerant to enzalutamide are given abiraterone and the body stops producing testosterone.
Previously, in England and Wales, the drug was only available to patients who had failed other hormone therapies, but in Scotland, Avilaterone was recommended as a first-line treatment earlier this year.
Currently, doctors can prescribe them when a patient is first diagnosed.
