Japan warns Tokyo Olympics 2021 of possible earthquake

Could earthquakes during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics be devastating?
On average, Tokyo experiences 60 earthquakes annually that can be felt by an average person. However, these were mostly minor tremors, rising one to 4 on the 7-point Japanese seismic scale. But Naoshi Hirata, head of the Earthquake Research Commission, said it’s possible athletes will feel slight tremors during the Olympics.
“So it is very likely that you will feel an earthquake during the Olympic Games. But it is not necessarily a very destructive one,” Hirata said.

According to experts, there is a 70 percent chance that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 or higher on a richer scale will hit Tokyo in the next 30 years. But Hirata explained that the chance of the Olympics happening is very slim.

“The chance of a very large earthquake in the Olympics period is very small compared to the chance of the Japanese experiencing such an earthquake in their lifetime. Of course, there is still a chance because we have been hit many times here, and we should prepare for such a big earthquake,” said Hirata.
