Controversy over EWEB’s plan to build new massive water storage facilities

Eugene, OR. EWEB plans to build two new 7.5 million gallon water tanks at their undeveloped properties in Patterson and Donald in South Eugene.

Construction will begin late this summer and will continue until 2023 when the Collage Hill Reservoir needs to be decommissioned.

EWEB has invested nearly $1 million over the past decade in temporary College Hill reservoir repairs.

It is the “backbone” of the water system required after an earthquake to meet basic community needs such as fire suppression, emergency response and drinking water distribution.

Nearly 80,000 people in Eugene depend on the College Hill’s 15-million-gallon reservoir for clean drinking water.

But it’s 80 years old and nearing the end of its useful life – it doesn’t drain and fill up effectively, affecting water quality.

Once the stockpile is done thanks to 40 and Donald, they plan to decommission the water tank at College Hill, said Joe Harwood, director of external communications at EWEB.

The bishop told those who live in the area what EWEB to return to their original plan.

“I’ve heard people say they live in this area — why not just stick with the original plan to build one reservoir now, maintain it, and then go to College Hill and deal with the failing reservoir there,” Bishop said. .

Harwood said there are notable advantages to this new plan to build both tanks simultaneously.

“It would actually save over a million dollars, I think about 1.4 million dollars, and consolidate the work into one disruption period — meaning we do it all at once,” Harwood said.

Construction will take the site down for about two to three years instead of doing it for years with four years of downtime in total.
