Bee City USA # 76 of Carson City welcomes the public to an information meeting April 1 at the Greenhouse Garden Center in Carson City, located at 2450 S. Curry St. Two sessions, one on pollinating plants by David Ruf, and a second on integrated pesticides The management of the protection of pollinators by Lyndsey Boyer, will be presented. The meeting will start at 5.30 pm and light refreshments will be offered. Everyone is welcome.
Carson City Bee City USA # 76 was established in 2018 under the leadership of the national Bee City organization sponsored by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. Members of the Nevada Great Basin Beekeepers presented the idea of forming a citizens' committee of Bee City USA, which was approved by the Carson City Supervisory Council in October 2018.
The objective of Bee City USA is to support and protect the pollinator habitat in Carson City and to educate the public about the value of pollinators, which are vital for reproduction by over 85% flowering plants of the world, including more than two-thirds of the world's cultivated species.
The United States alone produces more than 100 crops that need or benefit from pollinators. Unfortunately, in many places, the essential pollination service is threatened by habitat loss, the use of pesticides and introduced diseases.
