Tampa Bay Lightning’s beloved national anthem singer was transferred to the ICU a few days after she was hospitalized at COVID-19, her husband tells 10 Tampa Bay.
Sonya Bryson-Kirksey has been hospitalized since July 16 after a positive COVID-19 test. Her husband, Jimmy Kirksey Jr., said she was fully vaccinated but was more vulnerable to the delta mutation because she suffered from multiple sclerosis.
Her husband added that she got the virus from an unvaccinated person, and if she wasn’t shot, “she may not be here.”
According to Kirksey, his wife’s fever worsened Tuesday night and the hospital had to move her to the ICU. “I hope it breaks soon,” he said, adding that it would take 48 hours for the results to come out.
Lightning fans have poured their support since the news of her hospitalization was reported.
Last week, a Tampa Bay Lightning spokesperson said: “Sonya is an important member of the Lightning family and an integral part of our Game Day experience. We wish her best and want a quick recovery.”
