Austin health officials warn that the surge in COVID cases leaves an ICU bed with 16 staff for 2.3 million residents.

Austin’s public health department has urged the community to act “when the situation gets worse.”
“We are running out of time and our community must act now,” Dr. Desmer Walks of the Austin Travis County Health Department said in a city statement. “Our ICU capacity is reaching a critical point where the level of risk is significantly increasing not only for those in need of COVID treatment, but for the entire community.”
Disastrous numbers come when Austin is fighting a surge in hospitalization. According to data collected by the city and Travis County, the average 7-day hospitalization for COVID-19 has increased by more than 47% over the past week. At that time, the number of COVID-19 patients in the local ICU increased by 28% from 91 to 117, and the number of ventilator patients increased by 38% from 47 to 65, a city statement said.
In July, the city added that more than 4,600 new COVID-19 cases and 19 deaths were reported to Austin’s public health department.
In a statement shared by the Austin City Council meeting On Tuesday, a local nurse practitioner said the capacity of their hospital’s intensive care unit had recently “collapsed.”
“They are literally all on ventilators and / or ECMO lung bypass,” the nurse practitioner wrote in a statement.
“I’m angry. I’m very angry,” they added. “I was also sad and disappointed. I was able to completely prevent the third round. It is devastating to see and experience it in person.”
