Happy International Nurses Day
On the occasion of International Nurse’s Day and the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, the World Health Organization (WHO) joins hundreds of partners around the world to emphasize the importance of nurses in health continuity
and thank the sisters for what they do. The theme for this year is “Nurturing the World with Health”.
Throughout history, as today, nurses have been at the forefront of the fight against epidemics and pandemics – providing quality and respectful treatment and care. They are often the first, and sometimes the only, health worker that people see and see
the quality of their initial assessment, care and treatment is vital.
Nurses make up more than half of all health workers in the world, but there is still an urgent shortage of nurses in the world, and another 5.9 million more nurses are needed, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
The Covid-19 pandemic is a great reminder of the vital role of nurses. Without nurses and other health professionals, we will not win the fight against the epidemic, we will not achieve the goals of sustainable development or universal health coverage.
As we mark this day, we call on countries to ensure:
- occupational safety for nurses and all health professionals, including particularly unhindered access to personal protective equipment so that they can provide carefree care and reduce infections in health care facilities.
- nurses and all health professionals have access to support for mental health, timely pay, sick leave and insurance; as well as access to the latest knowledge and guidelines needed to respond to all health needs, including epidemics.
- nurses receive financial support and other resources needed to help respond to and control COVID-19 and future epidemics
In this year of nurses and midwives, now more than ever before, it is important that governments support and invest in their nurses. COVID19 reinforces the need to invest in nursing, education, leadership.
The WHO and partners launched the first Nursing Report Ever in the World in April, which provides a brief overview of the global nursing workforce, as well as highlights the scale of the challenges we face and provides feasible policies for governments
invest in care so that Health for All can become a reality.
By developing their country care workforce, they can achieve the triple impact of improving health, promoting gender equality and supporting economic growth. Strengthening nursing will have additional benefits from promoting gender equality (SDG5), contributing to economic development (SDG8) and supporting other sustainable development goals.

On Monday, May 11, on the eve of International Nurses Day, ICN, WHO and Nursing Now encourage people to participate in a moment of reflection to honor the memory of nurses and health workers who tragically died during the COVID-19 pandemic.
