The loud noise and growling that some New Castle County residents mentioned on social media Wednesday morning wasn’t an earthquake.

According to a USGS spokesperson, there were no earthquakes in the first state Wednesday.

An earthquake with its epicenter occurred near Clarksville, Maryland, shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday. But this magnitude 2.1 with a depth of 3.4 km was on the lower end of what could be felt and would not have affected Delaware.

The loud noise reported in parts of New Castle County on Wednesday morning may have been heard around 11:30 from a planned explosion on the Aberdeen Proving Ground.

The US Army posted on Twitter today its plans to fire during the day and night between 7:00 AM and 11:59 PM.

No earthquakes greater than 1.5 degrees have occurred in Delaware in the past year. The largest earthquake ever measured in the state was a magnitude 4.1 with its epicenter recorded near Dover in November 2017.
