Bereaved families mourn the victims of the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan

Pakistanis mourned the victims of the devastating earthquake on the 16th anniversary of the disaster that struck the northern parts of the country on October 8, 2005.

At least 70,000 people died in the disaster that hit Azad Jammu Kashmir, Indian Occupied Kashmir, Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Today, National Resilience Day is celebrated across the country to express solidarity with the victims of the 2005 earthquake, Radio Pakistan reports.

Bereaved families and members of civil society organized a celebration and held prayers in memory of their relatives who died outside the Margala Towers. The audience also observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims who died when the tower collapsed.

Residents of the Rolla Kot district complex also paid tribute to their loved ones on the anniversary of the disaster, while another gathering was held at Balakot Government Secondary School, one of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s hard-hit cities.

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit the country and destroyed 95 percent of the infrastructure in Balakot. It also affected thousands of people in Muzaffarabad as homes, schools, colleges, offices, hospitals and markets were reduced to rubble. The disaster also disrupted the lives of people in Bagh, Hazara and Rolakot.

The earthquake also displaced at least 0.5 million people.

Although billions of rupees have been allocated to the reconstruction of areas devastated by the earthquake, the development of the land has not reflected much improvement, according to a 2015 Dawn report.

After the disaster struck the country, Mansehra district, one of the areas worst affected by the October 8 earthquake, remained the top priority of the Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERA).

However, according to a report presented in the Senate on 266 development projects designed for Mansehra, only 153 progress has been made after the halfway point.

Days ago, the families announced that they would close the Mansehra-Naran-Galkhad road today in protest of the long delay in allocating plots of land in the Balakot New City project to them.

The housing project in New Balakot City was implemented in 2007 by the then military governor, General Pervez Musharraf, and was scheduled for completion in 2011, Dawn reports.

Sixteen years later, families in Balakot were still living in temporary homes.
