Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Doctors Encourage People to Screen During a Pandemic
Huntsville, Alabama – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to educate people about the effects of the disease.
According to local health experts, many had doctors’ preventive tests on the roadside when the pandemic began.
Mammogram and breast cancer screening begins at age 40 for women at average risk. According to Dr. Libby Shadinger, a radiologist and director of the Huntsville and Madison Hospital Breast Center, one in eight women is considered to be at average risk of breast cancer.
“Initially, it had a big impact on us,” Shadinger said. “In the spring of 2020, due to the Governor’s order, all screening mammography was suspended for about 6 weeks, so regular screening mammography was not performed.”
“We still saw patients with problems, those who were diagnosed with breast cancer, or who thought they had breast cancer, but not many who usually see it on a daily basis.”
Shadinger explained that cancer screening remains important, as life never stops during a pandemic. She said that 12.5% of women will have breast cancer in their lifetime.
“Overall, I’m worried that it could have a negative impact. They say that an additional 10,000 women could die of breast cancer because of the failure of screening as we normally do. We have done some research to show, “she said.
The Women’s Breast Center in Huntsville Hospital is starting to get busy as people find that appointments are too long.
“We still have people who are a little afraid,” Shadinger said. “I think people have lost their fear of being around each other, but now that we have experienced so much with family members and illnesses, we are afraid to find something. There is bad news. “
Dr. Shadinger said screening and mammogram bookings are possible, so if you need them, you don’t have to wait to book them.
