The quarantine order of Italy locks up 16 million people a quarter of its population on a large part of its territory in the north, near Milan.
- The London and Frankfurt stock markets fell sharply after heavy losses on the Tokyo and Shanghai stock exchanges. Investors remained on the alert for rising economic costs of the virus, but further compounded sentiment Monday: a quarrel between Saudi Arabia, Russia and other large producers over the reduction of oil production to support prices amid the virus epidemic. Oil prices plunged more than 20%.
- France is banning the events of more than 1,000 people to limit the spread of the coronavirus and is recruiting recently retired doctors and medical students to help deal with an increasing number of infections. - Saudi Arabia has suspended pilgrimages to the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina. It has also restricted access to many cities in the east of the country.
- The torch lighting ceremony for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics could take place in Olympia, Greece, without spectators, according to a Reuters report. As the coronavirus spreads, organizers are faced with a clock to find out if they should cancel the Summer Games. The event is scheduled to take place in Japan from July 24 to August 9.
- A Holocaust remembrance march in southern Poland has been postponed this year due to fears that the new coronavirus will sweep the globe. The event was to attract 110 delegations from around the world.
- The Bundesliga soccer league in Germany will take place without fans.
- Britain holds meetings to decide whether to implement a "social distancing" policy to limit the spread of the epidemic. This would mean banning large gatherings, forcing people to work from home as much as possible and limiting contact with transport centers and other densely populated areas.
- In South Korea, with the number of new cases slowing to 367 from 483 on Monday the day before, Health Minister Park Neung Hoo said the epidemic was the largest outside the country. China, now it has appeared in Italy "a little stagnant".
