Breast Cancer Survivors Encourage Women to Get Daily Mammograms

Breast cancer survivor Leander’s Amber York urges women not to skip annual mammogram examinations.

Leander, Texas — October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but Breast cancer Women need to stay in the center of the year.

Both the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend that women at average risk take their first mammogram each year after age 40.

“Three months later, in June, I found a small lump on my left chest,” York said. “I slept one night, but when I woke up in the middle of the night, my hands were squeezed into a lump. That woke me up.”

So York planned a mammogram to detect the tumor and perform a biopsy.

“That eventually led me to be diagnosed with early-stage triple-negative breast cancer,” York said. “I received 16 rounds of IV chemotherapy. My hair fell, my eyebrows fell, my eyelashes fell. Then I chose bilateral mastectomy.”

After treatment with St. David and breast reconstruction Georgetown, She followed all of it with eight rounds of oral chemotherapy that ended this June.

“So, for now, I don’t have active cancer,” York said. “I’m very lucky. Triple-negative breast cancer is a more aggressive form. And I’m really healthy sitting here and I can share my story with you thanks to early detection. “

Her message to all women, whether or not they have a family history of breast cancer: “Do a self-breast exam, get a mammogram, go to an annual health check. If you find a lump, don’t postpone it. Please come in and check it out. “

Dr. Bridget O’Brien, a surgical oncologist in York, states that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Approximately 80% of cases are unrelated to the family history of breast cancer or genetic mutations.
