The Geological Survey of India (GSI) will conduct a study of the area of minor earthquakes at Idukki Dam, one of the largest dams in Asia.

Sources at Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) said the expert team is scheduled to visit the dam next week, and a report will be submitted to the union government within four months. The visit comes on the heels of a number of aftershocks that have been reported in the region since February 2020. The study was delayed due to various reasons, including the epidemic.

On Monday, a senior official in the field of dam safety said that it is part of the study of the earthquake zone across the country, and the features of rock formation and the presence of any active fault zone will be investigated.

The study assumes importance given the vast catchment area of the reservoir and the presence of 10 small dams within a radius of 40 km. The team includes seismologists and engineers.

field survey

A two-member team will arrive in the region next week. The report will be based on a field survey using modern equipment. The Dam Safety Wing at KSEB will provide support to the team.

An expert panel was set up with Sameer Kumar Shukla, Director of Foundation Engineering and Analysis for Central Water Authority, as chairperson, and Pritha R., Deputy Chief Engineer, Dam Safety Organization, as it was set up earlier. Other members of the committee are CVR Murty from Chennai IIT; Eschwer Dat Gupt, former director of the Central Station for Water and Energy Research; Sandeep Kumar Som, Deputy General Manager, GSI, Western Region; and Alloushi Paul, former executive engineer, KSEB.

Earlier, seismologist Harsh K. Gupta said Iduki Dam was one of the nine major dams in the world in view of the potential for earthquakes. A report by the Union Government’s Building Materials Promotion and Technology Board has stated that the probability of an earthquake has exceeded 50% in Kerala.

Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history.
