The Royal Society Te Apārangi presents this award for the best scientific paper submitted by a PhD student, at any New Zealand university, studying physical sciences, earth sciences or mathematics and information sciences.

Presented to provide a framework for understanding why some volcanoes are more likely to erupt after an earthquake than others, Giles’ paper is the first review on the topic for 15 years—looking at the links between the two biggest hazards in Aotearoa New Zealand: earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Novel in providing a set of easy measurements to help better predict this interaction, the paper shows that the volcano’s hydrothermal system (the upper part where water is heated to steam) is particularly sensitive to earthquakes and that an earthquake cannot cause an eruption unless it is a volcano. The paper begins with a detailed review of the mechanisms by which an earthquake can cause a volcanic eruption. It then provides a classification of volcanoes according to how seismically they occur. The approach is novel because classification arises naturally from physical mechanisms, in contrast to previous efforts that relied on historical records. Gill’s paper goes further and includes characteristics of earthquakes in the classification, bridging the gap between seismology and volcanic communities.

While this review framework remains primarily theoretical, the classification was created using parameters that are already monitored in active volcanoes, making its real-world application more straightforward. The review also illustrates the need for interdisciplinary approaches because it used a unique blend of observational, and theoretical data. In particular, the article highlights gaps in our understanding of both volcanoes and earthquakes and lays the foundation and direction for future research.

The award committee noted that it is an outstanding achievement for a PhD student to have it published in the prestigious and high-impact journal Nature Communications. They rate the quality of the writing, research, and archaeology as exceptional and expect the study to have a significant impact on understanding these processes for the geological community and beyond.
