London woman, 31 years old, “disappointed” by NHS after missing cancer

The woman says she feels disappointed with the system after being diagnosed with stage 4. cancer..

Joanna Georgiou believes doctors have missed an opportunity to detect the disease early after first expressing their concerns in 2016.

At the age of 31, she says her knee lump was rejected as a cyst and ibuprofen was banned because of discomfort.

When the pain became so severe that he could not walk, Joanna sought private treatment in August 2021 and was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

She was given the catastrophic news that synovial sarcomas that formed near the joints had progressed to advanced stages and to other parts of her body.

Further examination revealed that she had six tumors in her lungs, a Citrus unshiu-sized tumor near her heart, and significant growth in her legs.

“I will never forget the doctor I went to first. I told him that this soft lump is not so painful to touch but feels sick.

“And he barely looked at my feet, he wasn’t interested in what I was saying at all.

“I actually got two types of diagnoses, one was that it was a ganglion cyst.

“And then there was a bleeding calcium bite. Throughout all of that, cancer wasn’t really discussed.

“At some point I was actually told that I had a benign tumor and I was on the waiting list to get rid of it.

“But I was behind that list because I was told that there was a more important cancer patient in front of me.

“I sometimes wonder if I’ve been waiting so long that I’m not going to reach the point that I’m going to be one of those important cases.”

Joanna said some medical staff helped, but overall she feels the system has failed her.

She is raising money online to assist her through treatment with four doses of chemotherapy.

Since a knee tumor is a serious concern, she is also considering whether to amputate her leg to stop the spread of the disease.

Joanna added: I feel like I’m working really hard. And I’ve always paid taxes, and I’m a good British citizen.

“The only thing we get is the NHS and I feel disappointed.”

Joanna believes her treatment was further delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the peak of the outbreak, medical services fought to keep track of the huge number of coronavirus-related hospitalizations, and reservations for various issues were canceled or postponed.

The government acknowledges that it can take years to eliminate the unprocessed portion of the NHS caused by the crisis.

Joanna said:

She continued:’I keep hearing this phrase “extend my life”, and I don’t want to extend my life. I’m thinking about surgery because I want to live my life.

“Doctors believe that the tumor can be removed from the chest, and there is no other way to remove the tumor, so I will have to amputate my leg.

“It’s a long way to recovery, but I’m a stubborn person and I won’t give it up easily.”
