Three people died after suspected outbreak of blastomycosis in Constance Lake First Nations
Three people died after a suspected outbreak of blastomycosis, a fungal lung infection, at Constance Lake First Nations, northwest of Timmins, Ontario.
Luke Moore, 43, died on November 19th. His family said they had been treated for pneumonia symptoms in the northeastern town of Hurst, Ontario, before the community suspected blastomycosis.
His father, Arthur Moore, said his son is now in Toronto and they are waiting for results on the cause of his death. The family says the death of the community and two others are associated with blastomycosis, but the chief said it has not been confirmed.
Luke Moore’s mother, Elizabeth Moore, said her son was healthy and strong. She added that he was very much liked in the community.
“And he has some beautiful grandchildren in this house. After asking about Grandpa, we tell them that Grandpa is in heaven,” she said.
In a Facebook video released on Sunday, Secretary Ramona Sutherland said 11 people were showing signs of infection at the time. She also confirmed that the dog died, probably due to an infection.
In a follow-up video on Monday, Sutherland said four cases of infection had been confirmed in clinical tests so far.
The band council will declare a state of emergency later that day, Sutherland said.
She added that five community members were transferred to a local hospital for treatment.
Fungal infection
Blastomycosis is an infectious disease caused by a fungus called Blastomycosis. Symptoms include fever, cough, night sweats, chest pain, fatigue, and muscle aches.
In severe cases, it can spread from the lungs to other parts of the body such as the skin, bones, joints, and central nervous system.
Dr. Anna Banergi, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, said the fungus is commonly found in the soil of certain woodlands in North America.
“What happens is that people may be walking in the woods, moving mountains of trees, rotting, or inhaling leaves. I don’t know, “Banerge said. “So it spreads through inhalation.”
Does not spread among people
She said the infection could not spread among people. If someone has a weakened immune system, it can be fatal, but it can also be treated with common antifungal agents.
“It’s not widespread throughout Ontario,” Banergi said of the fungus that causes the infection.
Chief Sutherland urged everyone in the affected area to go to the hospital as soon as possible.
“Don’t think this can be difficult, just go to the hospital,” she said.
She is working closely with Health Canada in case someone needs to be airlifted for treatment and is in contact with a hospital in the larger city center of northeastern Ontario. He said he was.
