NEW ORLEANS A Woman Shot Saturday Night in Treme was a child actress who played a starring role in the acclaimed film Beasts of the Southern Wild. A second victim, a man whose age has not been released, was injured in the shooting.
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified the murder victim as 22-year-old Jonshel Alexander, who played Joy Strong in the hit low-budget film that portrays an impoverished South Bayou community. New Orleans Police said on Tuesday that detectives recovered a van that is believed to be the getaway vehicle in the double shooting. The NOPD is still looking for a man with a face covered in a ski mask standing next to the brown truck in a grainy image from a security camera.
The shooting took place at North Claiborne Avenue and Columbus Street around 9 p.m. Saturday.
Officers from the First District responded to a call for shots and found the female victim. She was pronounced dead after the arrival of EMS personnel.
Shortly after, an adult male arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his body. Police had no update on his condition on Tuesday.
Investigators are still gathering evidence and information to identify the person (s) involved in this incident, as well as a motive.
