Herne Bay tennis courts closed by Canterbury city council despite Boris Johnson saying games can continue

Tennis players appearing in their local courts after Boris Johnson said the games could be played have been disappointed – after the board removed the nets.

Regulars at Memorial Park, Herne Bay, hoped to take advantage of the government’s latest advice that people can exercise outside as much as they like.

But Canterbury City Council has removed the nets and closed the courts – because it does not have the manpower to establish a reservation system and clean up the courts after each session.

Eddington resident Dawn Rose says a number of Herne Bay tennis players have been “exasperated”.

After finding the courts closed last Wednesday, the 54-year-old retiree said: They have been used very well by small children, the elderly and the regulars who have a lot of fun.

Then suddenly, last week, people came to the courts and there are no mosquito nets and a sign that they are closed. It’s absolutely crazy.

According to guidelines issued by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), online or telephone reservation systems should be used “wherever possible” and the reels should be removed.

Ms. Rose added: Theres a group of regulars who are willing to volunteer to clean up and administer any reservation system that the board wishes.
