Boy Mayfield shares tornado experience

Raymond Delapina, 7, and his family all survived a devastating tornado that hit Mayfield, Kentucky Friday night.

Mayfield, Kentucky – Raymond Delapina is seven years old. He loves to draw and he loves dinosaurs – he wants to be a paleontologist someday.

Raymond also lived through one of the worst and deadliest tornado outbreaks in Kentucky history. He’s from Mayfield, Kentucky, one of the communities hardest hit by Friday night’s tornadoes.

“We all shook like an earthquake,” Raymond said. He and his family gathered together in the hallway when the storm hit, and his mother, Alejandra, put mattresses to protect Raymond and his little sister.

A giant tree in the family’s kitchen was shattered during the hurricane and their house is now uninhabitable. Fortunately, their entire family survived.

“He was telling my mom he was trying to protect his sister, but she wouldn’t stop crying and then he started crying and got even more scared,” Alejandra Delapina said.

As the family walked through the wreckage of their home, Raymond said he was saddened by the damage to the kitchen.

“Because my and my little sister’s yogurt and some of the things I loved were in the fridge,” he explained.

Delapena’s roof is now covered in a tarp as the city prepares for another round of wet weather. The tree that fell on the house has been chopped down and added to the growing piles of debris lining Mayfield Roads while families work to rebuild.

With the Christmas season approaching, the holiday spirit may be a little weaker than it was in years past in Mayfield, but Raymond still hopes Santa brings him some new coloring supplies for Christmas.

Fortunately, Alejandra said they already told Santa where to hand those gifts while their home was being repaired.
