PM should face investigation, not CM

Says Prime Minister Khan, who authorized sugar exports, was not named in the commission’s report

KARACHI: Opposing appeals to Sindh chief minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to record his statement before the sugar commission of inquiry, Sindh Information Minister Nasir Hussain Shah said it was the Prime Minister Imran Khan who was facing an investigation and not the CM.

Addressing a press conference with Sindh government spokesperson, lawyer Murtaza Wahab, on Thursday, he stressed that Prime Minister Imran Khan’s special assistant on accountability, Shahzad Akbar, had insisted on focus on Sindh CM without mentioning Punjab CM Usman Buzdar, whose mandate was in fact investigated by the sugar commission of inquiry. He added that the IP did not include the time when sugar was subsidized in Sindh.

Nasir pointed out that the commission’s report indicated that sugar prices had increased in domestic markets due to exports, adding that if prices were affected, exports should have been stopped.

“Prime Minister Khan, who authorized sugar exports, was not named in the commission’s report,” he said, adding that the Prime Minister should be investigated.

The minister said that whenever sugar was subsidized in Sindh, it was for the benefit of farmers, adding that in the past it was subsidized because the mills had sugar in abundance. “The provincial government has not subsidized sugar to facilitate big fish, but only to help producers and farmers.”
