Survey: COVID-19 Cases More Than State Counts | Local News
Boston-Nearly 95,000 Massachusetts residents are infected with the coronavirus, one of the highest rates in the United States, but new research suggests it may be just the tip of the iceberg.
Researchers at Imperial College London have discovered that nearly 900,000 people (about 13% of the state’s population) may be infected with the virus-caused respiratory illness, COVID-19.
That’s nine and a half times the state’s official number, which was 94,895 confirmed cases as of Thursday, with 6,640 deaths.
Studies suggest that even with a higher estimate of infectious disease, countries are far from “herd immunity” to COVID-19. A place where a large portion of the population is infected with the virus or vaccinated so that it does not spread further.
“There is no evidence that any state is nearing collective immunity or the end of the epidemic,” the researchers wrote.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University estimate that at least 70% of the country must have a contract with COVID-19 to achieve herd immunity to the disease.
Dr. Howard Coe Chan School of Public Health, Professor T.H. of Harvard University, said he agreed that the reported number of cases was probably inaccurate.
“Everyone agrees that the official numbers are underestimated,” he said. “But how much discussion is there?”
