Experts to study earthquakes and quakes in Vellore

An expert research team from New Delhi will soon conduct a detailed study of the earthquake and light tremors in Pernambut town of Vellore district.

This was announced by Vellore Collector P Kumaravil Pandyan after inspecting the affected areas in Pernambut town linking Vellore and Tirupatur districts on Sunday. Officials said the team will consist of experts from the International Institute of Technology in Delhi and the Ministry of Earth Sciences Consortium.

Accompanied by S. Dhananjayan, Revenue Department Officer (RDO), Gudiyatham, the collector interacted with the affected families in the city. “Over 40 houses have cracks due to the impact of the earthquake,” Collector said.

Officials said a mild earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale came from Pernambut town and surrounding villages, especially Tharikadu and Kubamedu, and the Aravatla hills adjacent to Chittor (AP) and Tirupatur districts since Dec. 21 at regular intervals. Most of the damaged houses were covered with bricks. Constructed along the hill, officials said, most of them did not have a strong foundation.

As a temporary measure, the district administration, along with local NGOs, have set up three temporary camps for the affected families where food, water and other basic amenities have been provided.

At the same time, the district administration is also doing paperwork to provide alternative housing sites for the affected families. Jameh said that houses will also be built under centrally sponsored schemes for those affected.
