No tsunami warning issued after Gwadar earthquake, PMD clarifies

Responding to fears of a tsunami spreading panic among people living along the coastal belt of Sindh Makran after a 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit Gwadar last night, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday clarified that the tremors pose no tsunami risk.

A PMD spokesperson urged people not to panic, adding that the department had not issued any tsunami warning after the quake. He emphasized that people who live along the coastal belt do not need to worry.

Speaking about the tsunami exercises in Karachi and Gwadar, the spokesperson said these are routine exercises. He said a strong earthquake near Makran Beach can always cause a tsunami but there is no time frame that can be given.

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit Gwadar and surrounding areas on Tuesday evening, raising fears of a tsunami along the coast of Balochistan and Sindh.

According to the National Seismological Center, the earthquake hit Gwadar at 2:22 am. The epicenter was 50 km from Gwadar in the Arabian Sea, at a depth of 20 km. There were no reports of injuries or property damage.

Emphasizing the need to take preventive measures, the Director General of the Department of Military Programs Management Muhammad Riyad said that his ministry issued warnings several times of a strong earthquake in the subduction zone in Makran region. He said any strong earthquake in the area could cause a tsunami.

Director of the National Tsunami Warning Center, Amir Haider Khan, said the threat of a tsunami looms over the coastal areas of Sindh and Makran. He stressed that the Makran subduction zone “like a nuclear weapon” is in the sea and “could explode at any time.”

He asserted that the coast of Sindh and Makran had already faced devastation in 1945 when a powerful tsunami caused by an earthquake occurred in the Makran subduction zone. Nearly 4,000 people were killed in the coastal areas of Makran due to the tsunami.

After 1945, the subduction zone is now active as it has completed its normal time scale, the official warned.

He said that Gwadar and Makran would be the most affected areas if any earthquake triggered a tsunami in the Arabian Sea, adding: “The tsunami can also hit Karachi in a very short time.”
