Cabinet: another 250 million euros available to support Groningen earthquake damage

The Cabinet is allocating an additional 250 million euros to a support scheme in which Groningen residents can get 10,000 euros to help pay for home improvement, or to make their homes more sustainable. Initially, 220 million euros were available for the scheme, but there was such a high level of interest that money ran out on the first day residents could apply for it.

There were very long queues in the offices to process the orders in person. As a result, 25,000 families were likely to be left behind.

“I’m sorry for the course of events and I immediately said on Monday that I would do everything in my power to see if I could solve this problem,” said Hans Velebreev, the foreign minister whose portfolio includes mining issues. “It is true that all Groningen residents who have stood in line for hours without results – literally excluded in the cold personally and digitally – can also apply.”

Earthquakes caused by gas extraction have plagued Groningen for decades. Thousands of homes are to be upgraded because they do not meet safety standards, but in many cases this actually leads to home demolition followed by new construction.
