Earthquakes in Afghanistan killed 26 people and three villages to the ground

Two earthquakes jolted Afghanistan’s western Badghis province along the border with Turkmenistan Monday afternoon, killing 26 people and flattening three villages of nearly 800 homes.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said the dead included women and children, and at least four people were wounded. On Tuesday, villagers in the area were still searching for family members and removing objects stuck under the rubble.

Badghis Province is one of the poorest and most backward regions of Afghanistan.

According to the United Nations, hundreds of brick homes destroyed in the earthquake were already at risk due to the country’s torrential rains. Many of the survivors spent the night in the hiding places of their relatives’ homes while others remained in the rubble of their homes.

The USGS recorded a 5.3-magnitude earthquake at 2 p.m., followed by a 4.9-magnitude earthquake at 4 p.m. local time.

The shells struck 41 km east and 50 km southeast of Ai Nau Qala, the provincial capital.

Bas Muhammad Sarwari, head of the county’s Department of Culture and Information, said terrified residents had fled their homes in search of safety.

Sarwari said the strongest earthquakes hit the Kadis region at the southern tip of the province, where the majority of the damage and deaths occurred.

By nightfall, he said, it was possible to establish contacts with only four villages.

“Tomorrow we have a plan to send rescue teams in addition to helping the affected families,” he said.

Sarwari said the quake was felt across the province.

Some homes in Qal’at Naw were cracked, but no serious injuries or extensive damage were reported.

“People whose homes have been damaged or destroyed are hosted by their relatives and other members of their communities,” the United Nations said.

“Initial reports indicate that there is an urgent need for food, shelter, non-food items and heating materials.”

The Taliban, who came to power after invading the country in mid-August, called on international aid organizations to provide immediate assistance, including tents and other basic necessities for the victims. The Taliban put the death toll at 22, and the discrepancy in numbers could not be immediately resolved.
