From January 16 to 19, the R/V Pelican passed off the coast of Jamaica toward Haiti along the Jamaica Corridor. Under the ocean waters, on the sea floor, we can trace the linear trace of the Enriquillo Plantin submarine fault zone on surface maps. We took sediment cores during the night.

We had problems with the winch and cable supporting the weight of the jumbo gravity drilling system (“Big Bertha”) as it descended and ascended through the water column. We had to change the drilling process to the right (right) side of the ship, as there is a smaller crane we could use. The right winch supports less weight than its predecessor, so we needed to use a smaller drill head and shorter tubes. This means that the length of the core we recover is shorter, so the sediment layers do not reach very long. With the Big Bertha system, we were able to recover six metres. With this smaller system, only one meter.

Hardware issues and rough seas are common on marine expeditions and we usually have several backup systems in place in case something happens while we are away from land. This is the situation.

As the prevailing winds blowing along the Jamaica Corridor accelerate, the waves are getting higher and the oceans getting rougher.
