The Under 19 World Cup match between Zimbabwe and Ireland was briefly interrupted by an earthquake which occurred off the coast of Port of Spain.

Zimbabwe and Ireland were playing in the Plate semi-final at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad when the earthquake hit.

Ireland spinner Matthew Humphreys was bowling the sixth over when the camera broadcasting the match began to shake.

Play was not stopped and Humphreys continued to bowl his over, while the commentators revealed the shaking was due to an earthquake.

ICC commentator Andrew Leonard said: “We are, I believe, having an earthquake right now in the box.

“We are indeed having an earthquake, I’ve never experienced that before. It felt like not just a train going by behind us, but the entire Queen’s Park Oval media center rocked.”

After Zimbabwe batter Brian Bennett hit the final ball of the over for four, fellow commentator Nikhil Uttamchandani quipped: “I don’t think Brian Bennett’s too fazed by that earthquake!”

The Seismic Research center at the University of the West Indies measured the tremor at 5.1 on the Richter Scale.

Leonard later tweeted a clip of the moment the earthquake hit with the caption: “5.1 on the Richter Scale apparently, bout 20 seconds of very very surreal shaking. Hope all alright in Tobago where the epicentre was.”

Zimbabwe and Ireland both finished third in their groups at the tournament and are competing for positions 9-12.

Ireland ended up bowling Zimbabwe out for 166, with Muzamil Sherzad picking up 5-20 from 7.4 overs.

Humphreys, meanwhile, took 3-32 from his 10 overs, while Bennett was Zimbabwe’s top scorer with 37.
