Vaccine Group Plans Advance Market Agreement for COVID-19 Vaccine

LONDON (Reuters)-The GAVI Vaccine Alliance says it will launch a future COVID-19 vaccine Advance Market Commitment (AMC) to help safe access to new shots in poor countries.

GMC CEO Sess Berkeley told Reuters that the AMC mechanism could be used by large vaccine manufacturers before large-scale trials could work, even during new product development. Said it should provide incentives to invest in different production capacities.

In return, GAVI agrees to buy large quantities of vaccine at an established fair price so that the initial dose is not immediately recalled by rich countries.

“GAVI is worried about low- and middle-income countries,” Berkeley said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

In a pandemic that has infected more than 6.3 million people around the world, nearly 100 drug development teams worldwide, including institutions, biotechnology and major pharmaceutical companies, are competing to develop a vaccine against COVID-19.

Among the front runners currently in trial are vaccines that may be being developed by AstraZeneca, CanSino Biologics, Pfizer and BioNtech, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Moderna and Sanofi.

GAVI is a public-private partnership backed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, the World Bank, UNICEF, and we are coordinating bulk purchases to reduce vaccine costs in poor countries.

“What we’re worried about is that wealthy nations could buy them when vaccines become available, unless they dramatically risk production and risk it at this time,” Berkeley said. He said.

“We are working with manufacturers to have a global reach, and we are trying to put together a facility that will help scale up by saying, “If there is a successful vaccine, we will buy it.” ”

Barclay did not mention vaccines or manufacturers that could be covered by GAVI’s first AMC proposal, but said details may be announced later this week.

GAVI plans to hold a Global Vaccine Summit in London on Thursday, aiming to secure around $7.4 billion in vaccination programs from 2021 to 2025. These funds help to immunize 300 million children and an estimated 7-8 million lives.
