Imagine there was an earthquake in New Hampshire. That shouldn’t be hard, since one was registered in Gorham on February 4, and another January 15 in Sanbornton. Now imagine you are an elementary school teacher, responsible for lessons in grammar, arithmetic, social studies, science and more. You have a class full of kids with different learning styles. It’s a challenge to be creative day after day. Then the news reports an earthquake. Could that be a chance to interest your students in geology? Or perhaps tie the earthquake to safety concerns such as fire preparedness?

Now imagine the state has just adopted a law requiring that you give two weeks’ notice before introducing “curriculum course material to be used in classroom instruction” because parents might find it “objectionable.” That’s the intent of HB 1015, now pending before the House Education Committee. Your opportunity to take advantage of a teachable moment is likely to fade if you have to wait two weeks. Who knows whether someone might be offended by seismology, plate tectonics or asking why we call New Hampshire “the Granite State?” But if you don’t comply with the law, you could lose your job.
