Local liquor stores withdraw Russian-made vodka in response to the war in Ukraine | News

Eugene, Raw. The shelves of liquor stores might look a little off the next time you go shopping.

The Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission recently ordered independently owned liquor stores to recall all Russian-made alcoholic beverages in response to the war in Ukraine.

The OLCC said the economic sanctions against the Russian government are aimed at ending this conflict.

“There’s a lot we don’t have control over as individuals, but it’s something we can do,” said Bruce Fingerhood, a Springfield resident.

Fingerhood said it was a symbolic act of solidarity with Ukraine.

“Business is important, you can’t just have opinions or ideas or say things,” said Eugene resident John Vogel.

But Eugene resident Charles Blakely said they’re on the fence about everything.

“It’s hard to say, if getting rid of everything and not buying it helps send the message that what Putin is doing is wrong, that’s a good thing. If it increases people’s hearing in Russia, and the general public, it probably isn’t,” said Blackley.

In their Santa Clara liquor in Eugene, they removed all Russian-made vodka from themselves last Thursday.

Assistant manager, Sebastian Schneider, said he supported the decision, even though it was a popular purchase.

“A lot of times it was people who come in Russian family members. It was kind of a specialty, trying to buy them a gift, and that was basically where those sales went. It was decent. We sold a lot of them to keep to continue restocking, Schneider said.

He said they sold two types, the Russian Standard and the Hammer and the Mangle.

Schneider said he’s noticed people taking the initiative on their own. He said that many would not even buy vodka with a Russian sounding name.

“We’ve had people come in and buy other ones like Russian sounding vodka and they were like ‘Oh, I don’t buy this anymore,'” Schneider said.

He said the vodka was in the back of their store, waiting to be picked up.

Liquor stores in Oregon will still carry some Russian-name liquors but not wines purchased from distilleries located in Russia.

Other states such as Utah, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Pennsylvania have made similar decisions.
