Notre Dame receives $3.4 million to support education in Haiti

The University of Notre Dame’s entire Global Child Development Center has been awarded three scholarships totaling $3.4 million. The university says grants from the WK Kellogg Foundation, the LEGO Foundation and the US Agency for International Development will fund its flexible education programs in Haiti.

Part of the funding will support education partnerships that assist in disaster recovery and catalyze the development of long-term education systems in Haiti. Notre Dame says the GC-DWC will host virtual and in-person meetings to review and reimagine a more flexible education system in Haiti.

“With our partners in Haiti, we are building resilient child development and education systems based on the three pillars of Haitian society: home, school and church,” said Kate Schwenk Lucien, Director of Haiti and Senior Associate Director for Strategic Planning at GC-DWC. “These new awards allow us to expand the scope of our work, particularly in light of the damage caused by the 2021 earthquake.”

Funding will also support emergency systems activation, as well as the USAID Crisis Adjustment Tool, which allows the center to build on its strong beginnings project and provide additional resources to Haitians amid political protests, school closures, and frequent earthquakes.

The university says the additional funding will also allow the GC-DWC to build temporary educational structures, provide psychosocial support to parents and provide nutritional support.
