Potential new treatments for Covid-19 identified by scientists
Scientists have discovered new solutions for treating Covid-19 infections using biological substances. According to the latest research, scientists have discovered a substance that blocks SARS-CoV-2 from replicating itself and protects infected cells when tested on human lung cells. The new treatment was identified by Cedars-Sinai researchers at Covid-19, using biological material created by redesigned human skin cells.
Existing so far COVID-19 Treatments are primarily focused solely on preventing viral replication. However, scientists claim that new therapies not only block replication, but also protect or repair tissue. This is important because COVID-19 can cause patient-affecting symptoms long after the viral infection is resolved.
The potential treatments investigated in this study were created by scientists using skin cells called skin fibroblasts. Researchers have designed cells to produce therapeutic extracellular vesicles (EVs), nanoparticles that act as communication systems between cells and tissues. By manipulating these fibroblasts, we were able to secrete an EV (which researchers called “ASTEX”) with the ability to repair tissue.
In previous experiments, researchers have demonstrated that ASTEX can repair damage to the heart, lung, and muscle of laboratory mice. When the COVID-19 pandemic occurred in 2020, researchers began to study whether ASTEX could be used as a treatment for SARS-CoV-2.
This study was conducted in collaboration with UCLA researchers who tested ASTEX by applying ASTEX to human lung epithelial cells (cells that line the airways and are targeted for SARS-CoV-2 infection). rice field.
They found that ASTEX prevented cells from initiating an inflammatory process that could lead to cell death. Cells treated with ASTEX have also reduced the type of protein called ACE that SARS-CoV-2 may use to infect cells.
Next, the team compared potential treatments with remdesivir, the drug currently used to treat COVID-19, and found that remdesivir did not inhibit ACE production. Instead, remdesivir prevents the virus from latching on a protein called ACE2. Therefore, ASTEX may offer another way to prevent the virus from invading cells.
“The virus uses proteins because it doesn’t have its own mechanism for invading cells,” Ibrahim said. “We believe that targeting the ACE protein is just one way for SARS-CoV-2 to infiltrate cells, hijack their genetic information, and replicate in the body.”
ASTEX seems to have stopped this hijacking process.
