The Eden Project was hit by an earthquake last night which left locals “terrified”.

Residents near a visitor attraction in Cornwall said the sound “sounded like a bomb had gone off” before their homes shook.

A spokesperson for Project Eden said a “small seismic event” associated with geothermal testing operations was reported around 9.20pm on Wednesday.

Local Kylie Gooch told Cornwall Live: “Maybe you should have warned people.

“She frightened so many of us. That must have been too strong for our homes to ring as she did.”

Another resident added: “It looked like a bomb had gone off in Pennythick.”

No major damage was reported.

A spokesperson for the Eden Project said: “We are aware that a small seismic event was felt and heard near the Eden Geothermal site shortly after 9:20 PM last night.

An investigation and analysis of seismic monitoring data has confirmed that the event is related to testing operations at Eden Geothermal.

“No damage was reported, and the event was within regulatory limits, but in order to reduce the potential for further disruption, we have halted operations while additional mitigation controls are in place.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” he added.

Scientists last conducted geothermal drilling at the site in November with the aim of bringing renewable energy to the area.

The Eden Project hopes to use scorching rocks deep underground to heat water used at the site.

Eden Geothermal CEO Gus Grand said the company was not drilling at the time of the earthquake.

“We’re testing right now, which means we’re injecting water into the ground to see how permeable it is, and that’s related to very small seismic activity,” she said.

Ms Grand said Thursday’s event was “a little bit bigger” than the 300 to 400 other earthquakes reported at the site.

“The missile that hit Thursday night had a magnitude of 1.6.

“This is very common in the UK and there have been four of this size in the past few weeks.”
