Tuberculosis can cause premature cellular senescence, new research discovers
India reported 19,33,381 cases of new and recurrent TB in 2021 — an increase of 19% year-on-year — the Center stated in its annual TB report.
Human and animal cells that recovered prematurely from tuberculosis to the age of 12-14 years were discovered in a new study. According to a Baylor College of Medicine study, survivors are at increased risk of relapse and death, even after successful treatment.

In this study, researchers studied several cohorts and multiple tissue types. They found that tuberculosis induces perturbations in epigenetic regulation, especially those mediated by DNA methylation. These changes are associated with oxidative stress-induced aging and correlate with premature cell aging. Both guinea pigs and humans have preserved these processes.
Dr. Dinaldo, the lead author of the study, said this is an important area of note after severe infections such as SARS-CoV-2 and sepsis. He said the severity of the infection is also involved in cellular senescence.
Dr. Christian Koafa, an associate professor of molecular cell biology at Baylor College of Medicine and the corresponding author, aims to delay and reduce premature epigenetic aging of these cells as the mechanism is elucidated. I mentioned that there are several ways to do this.
