Azores authorities prepare for evacuations amid fears of an earthquake

Authorities in the Azores are preparing for a possible evacuation of citizens amid fears of a major environmental disaster.

The Portuguese archipelago has been hit for six consecutive days of minor earthquakes, which has raised concerns about a major earthquake or volcanic eruption.

The region’s CIVISA Volcanic Seismic Monitoring Center has raised the Volcanic Alert Level to 4 from 5, meaning there is a “real possibility of an eruption.”

The islands’ regional government chief said Thursday that airlines are increasing the number of flights to and from São Jorge, where about 8,300 people live.

Scientists say it is difficult to predict the consequences of persistent, albeit low-intensity, seismic activity.

The municipality of Vilas Island – which has a population of about 3,000 – has been the epicenter of only more than 2,000 minor earthquakes since March 19. Officials are moving elderly residents to another part of the island as a precaution.

Emergency services have also established safe corridors for traffic and temporary accommodation for evacuees on the eastern side of the island.

Officials say any public alerts about an earthquake or volcanic eruption will be broadcast on local radio, social media or by ringing church bells.

São Jorge is one of the nine islands that make up the Azores, located approximately 1,500 kilometers west of the Portuguese mainland. A line of dormant volcanic cones runs along the central edge of the island.

The last volcanic eruption on land in the Azores was in 1957, on the island of Faial, while an earthquake on the same island in 1998 killed 10 people.
