Express train services between Tokyo and Fukushima reopened

FUKUSHIMA – Express train services between Tokyo and Fukushima in northeastern Japan resumed on April 2 for the first time since a strong earthquake off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture last month disrupted operations on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line.

However, services between Koriyama and Fukushima stations operate at only half the normal capacity.

However, this development came as a huge relief to travelers seeking to reach the capital quickly.

A 24-year-old company employee who lives in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, boarded an express train to Tokyo from Fukushima Station. She said she had to take 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach her departure point with existing rail services as express train tracks from Fukushima to Sendai stations remained suspended due to the damage caused by the earthquake.

“It’s good news that service for Fukushima has been restored,” she said. “I very much hope this will also be the case with Sendai Station soon.”

Resuming operations between Tokyo and Fukushima stations means that the Yamagata Shinkansen line is fully restored.

Prior to the reopening, express train services were only available between Shinju Station in Yamagata Prefecture and Fukushima Station.

A strong earthquake on the night of March 16 derailed an express train in Shiroshi, Miyagi Prefecture. It also caused extensive damage to elevated tracks and utility poles, suspending services between Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture and Morioka in Iwate Prefecture.

However, operations between Nasushiobara and Koriyama stations resumed about a week later, along with services between Ichinoseki and Morioka stations.

East Japan Railways said that services between Sendai and Ichinoseki stations are expected to reopen on April 4.

The company said that services between Fukushima and Sendai stations are expected to resume around April 20, raising the possibility that the entire Tohoku Shinkansen line will reopen later this month before the start of the Golden Week holiday.
