Kings Mountain home owner refuses to sell to Albemarle Co.

Cleveland County, North Carolina – The Albemarle Lithium Company of Charlotte, which mined lithium in the 1980s in Cleveland County, wants to reopen its Kings Mountain site.

Homeowner Clay Brugman bought a home in Kings Mountain four years ago, never imagining that he would likely live next door to an active mining site.

“We’re hoping to have a family, and we’re trying to get into that, and have a place where the kids can grow up, be able to ride bikes, like I did when I was a kid,” Brugman said.

Behind his house is the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail. On the other side of the track is the old Albemarle lithium mine pit, which was used to mine lithium.

The hole has filled up with water, but the company wants to drill again for the resource under Kings Mountain’s land.

Lithium is used to power electric cars, laptop computers, and power tools. The resource is scarce, but a large portion of it can be found in North Carolina, specifically the Kings Mountain area.

The company held an open meeting in March with community members. In the crowded city hall building, community members heard from company leaders regarding the plans, which are now merely exploratory and in the planning stages.

Several neighbors asked questions, including Bruggeman.

Bruggeman says company leaders have offered to buy his home and land next to the Gateway Trail. He asked about the intentions of the company in his land, and they replied by arranging a private meeting with him and with the company’s leaders.

A few months ago, Brugman says, his house started shaking whenever the company exploded. On his front porch, a large crack now basically appeared.

“The first times we weren’t sure, but it’s a bit like an earthquake,” he said.

So far, Bruggeman has turned down offers to sell his Albemarle Lithium property, but he hasn’t completely ignored the project.

“I want to make sure they are doing it for the right reasons, or if they are not doing it for the right reasons, I get enough money to be able to do something good because of selling it,” he said.

The company plans to hold town halls every three months. The project is still in the planning stage.

Planning is also underway to open an information center in downtown Kings Mountain.
