In a small study, Lisman found that the presence of retinal plaques in the eye correlates with brain scans that show higher levels of cerebral amyloid. This can be one of the first signs of illness, and these “spots” can be detected during a normal eye examination.
“The goal is to enable optometrists and ophthalmologists to become front-line people screening for Alzheimer’s disease at annual patient interactions,” Lisman emphasizes.

Retinal imaging significantly reduces costly MRI and PET scans. According to the Alzheimer’s Disease Association, treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia cost $ 355 billion last year. By 2050, these costs could rise to 1 point and 1 trillion.
In the next step, researchers are planning a larger study of people in the asymptomatic stage.
