Boris Johnson says “black life matters” but attacks minorities who “overturn rules” – BBC News

Boris Johnson warns that the fight against racism can lead to violence by a minority.

The prime minister said it was impossible to turn on the “depth of emotion” of George Floyd, a show by an African-American man who lost his way to U.S. police in Minnesota.

Mr Johnson was protesting in the UK over thousands of people over the weekend (with some violent attacks on police) and in the 17th century a statue of a slave trader in Bristol was torn down and thrown into port.

House Secretary Priti Patel said there should be no more public protests during the coronavirus pandemic and warned that some who are affected by violence or harm will face justice.

Bristol police have identified 17 suspects, Edward Colston said, when a 17th-century merchant made a fortune in the slave trade. Anyone who has filmed the events is welcome to share the images with them.

Earlier police said they were happy that the decision they did not intervene was correct. The state had long been the target of campaigns, saying Colston was not a man worth remembering in public.

Thousands of people took part in demonstrations over the weekend as part of the Black Lives Matter campaign. Although the government had health risks of being a large group during the pandemic, many decided to participate in March for the first time.

Huw Edwards presents the BBC News at Ten film with political editors Laura Kuenssberg, Jon Kay Bristol, Rianna Croxford and Clive Myrie.
