The first confirmed case of bird flu in Pennsylvania
East Danegor Township, Lancaster County (WBRE / WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Agricultural Service confirmed the first bird flu infection in the federal commercial poultry industry on Saturday.
A bird flu outbreak occurred in a flock of chickens at a poultry farm in Lancaster County. The East Danegor Township farm and all commercial poultry farms within a 6 mile radius are under quarantine.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, there is no risk to the human body, but highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is highly infectious and can be fatal to poultry.
“Protecting Pennsylvania’s $ 7.1 billion poultry industry is a top priority throughout the year,” said PA Agriculture Secretary Russell Reading. “Strict biosecurity protocols are in place for both Pennsylvania farms and poultry products shipped inside and outside the state.
Russell also said that anyone visiting the farm should be aware that cars and shoes can carry the virus from other places you walk. Be sure to clean thoroughly and tell people to stay away from the poultry hut unless you need to be in the poultry hut.

The Inter-Ministry HPAI Task Force works regularly to address and treat the threat of bird flu to federal bird populations. The Task Force includes the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Department, Agriculture, Health, General Services, Environmental Protection Departments, PSP, PA Games Commission, Air National Guard, USDA Animal and Plant Quarantine Services, Veterinary Services, and Wildlife. service.
The Task Force is set up to implement response plans that include education and public support, minimizing risk through rigorous action and continuous monitoring, testing, and management.
HPAI is highly contagious among poultry such as chickens, turkeys and geese, but with proper cooking, poultry and eggs can be safely eaten.
HPAI spreads through direct contact between healthy and infected bird excrement. It can cause sudden death, lethargy, loss of appetite, decreased egg production, softened or deformed egg shells, swelling, discoloration, runny nose, coughing, sneezing, and diarrhea.
