New in-depth study confirms Edgecumbe volcanic activity, earthquake swarm likely linked

Anchorage, Alaska (KTUU) – Seismic activity near Mount Edgecumbe has returned to nearly background levels, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, but scientists have now completed an in-depth analysis showing new information for the island near Sitka.

Geophysicists now believe that the seismic activity – which began nearly two weeks ago – is linked to magmatic activity at the volcano, which is considered dormant.

Scientists said the land on the island is rising very slightly because the magma beneath it is making its way toward the surface. The rise began in August 2018, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

“We think the magma is pushing the rocks below Edgecumbe enough to break some of them and cause the earthquakes we see,” said geologist Sherrill Cameron of the Alaska Department of Geological and Geophysical Surveys.

However, this activity does not mean that an eruption is looming.

“They haven’t erupted in hundreds to thousands of years,” Cameron said. “We expect to see a lot of evidence of unrest before the volcano erupts.”

That would likely include very noticeable earthquakes, Cameron said. According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, all earthquakes detected under the volcano since 2020 have been of 3.0 magnitude or less.

“The land under Edgecumbe does not have what we call an open channel,” Cameron said. “You know, it doesn’t have this space where magma has an easy path to the surface as it does in some volcanoes that erupt frequently, allowing it to erupt. … The magma in this case would have to actually break the rocks to get to the surface of the volcano, and that would lead to the occurrence of earthquakes that can be observed on seismometers.”

She said there was no cause for concern. However, it is always important to be prepared for any kind of natural disaster.

“We’re making plans to see what we can do about getting Edgecumbe ready,” Cameron said. “Edgecumbe is, of course, within the Tongass National Forest, so we will need to work closely with the Forest Service.”
