A team led by Anil Kumar, Assistant Commandant of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), conducted a mock earthquake exercise in the city today. The exercise began with a message received at the District Disaster Management Authority office that buildings, including the BDO office, the boys’ school and the collection office, had collapsed in the aftermath of the earthquake and that many people were trapped in the rubble.

Dipashweta Panik, Deputy Commissioner and Head of the District Disaster Management Authority, directed the teams to reach the reported sites and start the rescue operation. It also virtually observed the rescue and evacuation process in the area’s video conferencing center.

She said the exercise was helpful in training and energizing staff and educating people on how to stay safe in critical situations. She added that she helped find out the condition of the equipment and its defects. This would help improve infrastructure and make rescue operations more results-oriented.
