LWF World Service offers hope for a sustainable future

(LWI) – LWF World Service is building earthquake- and hurricane-resistant housing for the most vulnerable families affected by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Haiti last year. The CP’s housing construction design is the only one of its kind in the region and has the potential to shelter families from the impact of these recurring disasters for up to 30 years.

A road to recovery from recurring disasters

The earthquake that struck Haiti on Saturday, August 14, 2021, left more than 2,200 dead, 12,000 injured and more than 80,000 homes damaged. Roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, churches, and public buildings were destroyed. To make matters worse, shortly after the earthquake, Haiti was attacked by tropical storms.

In the wake of these emergencies, LWF World Service in partnership with Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) provided humanitarian assistance to 24,430 vulnerable individuals from 4,000 families. The assistance included building homes for ten families whose homes were damaged in the earthquake, providing cash grants to 600 vulnerable families, especially those headed by women, and supporting livelihoods.

Marie Nucia is a young grandmother who lives with four grandchildren. She lost her home and her nephew in the earthquake. Like many affected families, they are still in mourning. As a participant in the housing project, Mary provides protection from rocks, timber, and food to the builders to help with construction.

The project is unique in that it is a rooted community initiative and Marie receives some support from her neighbours. Homes are specifically designed to withstand hurricanes and earthquakes. The wooden structure of each house rests on a concrete foundation with metal ties to secure the house. The roof was also built to allow strong winds to pass through. The homes are built to last 25 to 30 years, a sustainable change from the typical temporary shelter that many still have to rely on in Haiti’s emergency responses. If repairs are needed, materials can be found in the community or locally in Haiti and the homeowners have been trained to ensure basic maintenance.

LWF World Service hopes to encourage partners and local communities to join forces in finding long-term solutions that can provide greater resilience and resilience in the face of recurring disasters.

The earthquake also disrupted all forms of transportation, disrupting supply chains and skyrocketing prices for food and basic resources across the country. Cash grants to women-led households provided an urgent reprieve. With the recipients of the financing, they were able to buy food and sometimes invest in their vegetable gardens and sell produce to generate a small form of income. LWF Haiti provides cash assistance to more than 600 families who receive $82 per household.
