Australian farmers are on the alert due to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Indonesia
Outbreaks of highly infectious foot-and-mouth disease have been reported in East Java, Indonesia, which could pose a multi-billion dollar threat to the disease-free state of Australia’s livestock industry.
Foot-and-mouth disease causes painful lesions in ungulates such as sheep, cows, pigs and goats. Infected animals are destroyed to stop the spread of the infection.

According to the Australian Cattle Council, the Indonesian government has reported more than 1,200 cases in four states: Gresik, Ramongan, Sid Arjo and Mojokerto.
This is the closest significant outbreak of the disease has occurred in Australia, and the livestock industry and government are struggling to secure the supply chain and limit the risks that spread here.
The cattle council said in a statement that Indonesia is preparing a state of emergency and is trying to determine which strain of the disease is present so that the vaccine can be prepared.
