Last week, Yellowstone National Park experienced its largest earthquake in nearly five years, with a 4.2-magnitude earthquake about 23 miles northeast of the park’s eastern entrance.

Scientists said the quake occurred in an area known for earthquakes.

The University of Utah seismic stations reported the earthquake at 7:32 a.m. on May 11.

The quake was felt as far away as Bozeman and is considered “light” or “weak,” according to the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. More than 30 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater have been recorded since 1973 in Yellowstone National Park.

A total of five earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater have occurred within 16 miles of Wednesday’s epicenter since 1962, scientists at the Yellowstone Observatory said. The largest nearby earthquake was the M4.2 earthquake that occurred 20 miles northeast of a bridge Hunting on March 25, 2008.

Fifteen “hair” reports – those that follow models the observatory uses to track the extent of the earthquake – were submitted from last week’s earthquake.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 8.7 miles and is the largest event to occur since June 15, 2017, when M4.5 occurred, according to the observatory.

Wednesday’s earthquake was not unusual for the region. The area between Lake Hepgen and the Norris Geyser Basin, northwest of Yellowstone, Montana, has experienced a range of small earthquakes over the years.

However, Michael Poland, the scientist in charge of the Yellowstone Volcano and Geophysical Observatory, said that despite the prevalence of earthquakes in the area, residents should not be concerned.

Often, smaller aftershocks or earthquakes occur after a larger event, something that scientists have said is a natural process.

“Wednesday’s M4.2 site is an abundant seismic zone – one of several similar areas in Yellowstone – so it is not surprising that an M4 earthquake occurred at this site,” Poland said.

Regarding timing, there is not much to suggest that earthquakes in Yellowstone occur at a particular time of the year.

“There may be a slight tendency for more earthquakes to occur during the summer months, concluding that there is more groundwater due to melting ice that recharges the groundwater,” Poland said. “Since increasing pore pressure can help enhance fault slip, it is not surprising that we would see more small earthquakes when there is more water underground.”
