Tsunami warning issued in Australia after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the region

An earthquake in the Pacific has rocked Australia’s Macquarie Island – with officials now warning of a possible tsunami danger in the area

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck near an Australian island as officials issued a possible tsunami threat.

The earthquake reportedly occurred at a depth of 29.3 kilometers (18.21 miles) near Macquarie Island.

The Australian Joint Tsunami Warning Center has announced that Australia is on tsunami alert.

But the US Tsunami Warning System indicated that the tsunami was likely to pose little threat after the earthquake.

This includes Macquarie, the lands of the surrounding islands as well as mainland Australia.

The island is located just under 1,000 miles southeast of Tasmania and is home to an Australian research station in Antarctica.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its “amazing spectacle of wild and natural beauty with huge concentrations of penguins and seals”.

Macquarie was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 8.2 in 1989 and another 8.1 in 2004.

Just last year, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake – the most powerful in 50 years – hit Melbourne.

And caused the collapse of the ruins of buildings and power outages, as panicked citizens rushed to safety.

Geoscience Australia confirmed the quake had its epicenter near the rural town of Mansfield, 124 miles northeast of Melbourne.

It was six miles deep and there was no danger of a tsunami on the Australian mainland.

It was the largest earthquake to hit the country since 1968 when a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck east of Perth.

A local radio station published a picture of the rubble on a Melbourne street, which it said was caused by the earthquake.

Others said they had been evacuated from buildings in the wake of the quake and residents of northern parts of the city said on social media that they had lost electricity.

The quake was felt as far afield as Adelaide, 500 miles to the west in the state of South Australia, and Sydney, 600 miles to the north in New South Wales.

There were no reports of damage outside Melbourne, and no injuries reported.

The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“We have no reports of serious injuries or worse, and this is very good news and we hope the good news continues,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters in Washington.

“It could be a very upsetting event, an earthquake like that. They are very rare events in Australia, and as a result, I’m sure people would have been sad and upset.”

Mansfield Mayor Mark Holcomb said he was in his ranch home office when the earthquake hit and ran outside for safety.

“I’ve had earthquakes overseas before and they seemed to last longer than I’ve experienced before,” he told ABC.

“The other thing that surprised me was how loud it was. It was a real roar like a big truck passing by.”

He said he was unaware of major damage occurring near the epicenter, although some residents reported communication problems.
