The director of geological survey in Idaho says the earthquake offers new opportunities for research

The earthquake, which measured 6.5 on March 31 near Stanley in south-central Idaho, sent a multiplier effect to cases that researchers have to explore.

This clatter is expected to last for months and possibly years.

The biggest aftershock in the USGS catalog after the event was 4.8. There were 10 records over 4.0, the last of which was on June 9. Nearly 200 records were recorded between 3.0 and 4.0.

This number and the frequency of the aftershocks of an earthquake are expected to be of this magnitude.

Scientifically, this was an interesting event and would provide important data to further our understanding of seismic and tectonic development in Idaho.

The rare phenomena of the delta slide and the shore of Lake Stanley, which resulted from the event, can be used as a case study to help develop safety protocols, including in the areas of engineering and building codes.

As a result of the strong ground movement during the earthquake – or perhaps one of the largest aftershocks – the land and sediments that formed the delta were liquid. This means that they lost their hold and acted like liquids for a short time.

The delta itself also collapsed and slid into the deepest part of the lake. We still do not know how far it has reached, nor whether this phenomenon has occurred in the past. We are planning for further investigation.

Despite the popularity of the lake, it is located in a remote area and did not cause deaths. If the collapse had occurred during a summer day, the result would have been different.

In response to the Stanley Lake Delta meltdown, the Geological Survey of Idaho is developing an interactive online map that will display the location of fractures and overlapping liquefaction features on a composite aerial photograph taken using a drone.

The map will provide field data to the scientific community as event documentation and a way to preserve the short-lived features in the scene.

By working with partners such as Boise State University, we maintain a mobile seismic network to document the location, frequency, and intensity of aftershocks.

The earthquake was a stark reminder that Idaho is seismically active and that urban areas, including this area in Boise, are not immune to such major events. Earthquakes are a risk in Idaho that needs a better understanding. The Geological Survey of Idaho and the University of Idaho and its partners are proud of this search.
