The Kanlun volcano on Negros Island remains below Alert Level 1 amid the ongoing volcanic earthquakes caused by volcanic activity that occurred since last week.

During the 24-hour observation by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) from 8 am on Saturday, June 27 to 8 am on Sunday, June 28, the seismic volcano network recorded 30 volcanic tectonic earthquakes on the western wings and one Volcanic earthquake in the summit area.

However, these earthquakes were too small to be felt.

Vivulks said that moderate emissions from white columns loaded with steam rose 300 meters before the northwest drift of the country were also observed from the top of the volcano.

It also indicated that SO2 emissions were measured at an average of 116 tons per day. The presence of large sulfur dioxide from the volcano can indicate that the magma is still approaching the surface.

According to Phivolcs, ground deformation data from continuous GPS measurements indicate slight shrinkage in the lower and middle slopes, since January this year.

“The monitoring of the short-term electronic inclination on the southeastern sides recorded the continued contraction on the lower slopes, but inflation on the intermediate slopes since April 2020,” she said.

She indicated that “these criteria indicate that thermal or magmatic activity takes place under the edifice.”

The Cancun volcano has been below Alert Level 1, the lowest on a five-level scale, since March 11, 2020. This means that the active volcano is in an abnormal state and has entered a period of turmoil.

Phivolcs warned the public that entry to a permanent danger zone of four kilometers is strictly prohibited due to possible, sudden, and potentially dangerous explosions.

Furthermore, civil aviation authorities were asked to advise pilots to avoid flying near the volcano’s summit as airborne ash and ballistic parts of a sudden surge could pose risks to aircraft.
